RHS Girls Ultimate
WELCOME TO RHS GIRLS ULTIMATE
This is the official website for the Roosevelt High School Girls Ultimate team in Seattle, Washington. The Girls Ultimate program at RHS is a strong, established club team that thrives thanks to our emphasis on highly skilled, team oriented, and competitive play in the spirit of the game. While the 2020 and 2021 seasons were cancelled, disrupted, and reconfigured for the pandemic, in 2019 the Varsity team won the quadruple crown of high school ultimate: the SPS league, the Seattle Invite, the Washington State Championship, and the High School National Invitational. Moving ahead, we hope to return the program to that same level of skill, sportsmanship, and fun. The team is run by parents and students who volunteer their time to help support the team.

WINTER '21-'22 Mixed (coed) Season
UPDATE 10/16/21: The DiscNW High School Mixed (coed) League runs roughly December - February. RHS fields both Varsity and JV teams that play in this league during the winter season and also compete at the 2-day Spring Reign tournament in Burlington, one of the largest youth Ultimate tourneys in the country. Because mixed teams offer only half as many spots for each gender as single gender teams, places are more limited and many who play Varsity on a single gender team may play JV on a mixed team. We anticipate having to cut this season.
This season, we are fortunate to have Coach Khalif returning to coach the Varsity team and Coach Jason returning to coach the JV team.
Tryouts for our Mixed teams will be held: Wednesday, November 17, 2021 from 4-6 pm at Lower Woodland field 7 and Thursday, November 18, 2021 from 5-7 pm at Lower Woodland, field 7.
Prospective players should register through DiscNW, pay the DiscNW fee and sign all waivers: Winter Mixed League. Registration for players begins in late October. All players should select the Roosevelt JV Mixed Team, using the password, "Layout" to register. After tryouts, players will be sorted into teams as determined by the coaches. DiscNW will provide refunds of the registration fee if a player is cut or chooses not to play. In addition to the DiscNW fee, there will be a separate team fee of $TBD that will help to pay for gear, fields and coaches.
Practices start the week of November 22 and games begin the December 4-5 weekend. See the calendar for detailed information on dates, times and locations of practices, byes and playoffs.
Note that tryouts, team placements, and registrations for the winter mixed teams are independent from the spring-season girls' teams.
FALL '21 Updates
10/11/21 update: We hope and expect our regular spring HS Girls' season to return in March, 2022. If you'd like, you may add your name to our contact list and we'll be in touch with updates on that as the next season approaches. Even if you played in the summer league, please be sure to add your name and contact info to the list. Until then, the RHS Girls are playing for the first time in the DiscNW Girls HS Fall Club league. Please see our calendar for dates and times and see below for info on the Mixed (coed) season during winter.
We're grateful for sponsorship by local coffee company, Caffe Ladro, who has operated neighborhood cafes, bakeries, and roasteries in the Seattle area since 1994. Their cafe on the corner of Northeast 65th St. and Brooklyn Ave. NE, one block in front of RHS, is a welcoming place to take a break. Please help us thank them by supporting all of their locations!
TRYOUTS & PLACEMENTS
For a normal spring season, tryouts are held over 2-3 days in mid-February with assignments to Varsity and JV teams immediately following, and the start of the season thereafter. The future success of our program relies on a strong pipeline of players, so athletes of all ages and abilities are encouraged to try out as we offer both a Varsity team and a no-cut JV team (numbers permitting), both coached by experienced adult coaches. February, '22 tryout dates for the Spring, 2022 season will likely be announced in late December or early January. Please check back here often for updates, or get on our email list to receive email updates using this link--> https://RHSGirlsUltiRegForm
Prior to tryouts, players will need to complete a Google Docs registration form whose link will be posted here when the time comes. Once team placements are announced, players have a week to submit their paperwork and payment (see below), or make other financial arrangements. Practices begin immediately following tryouts, with dates, times, and locations posted on the calendar.
We field a Varsity and a Junior Varsity team. Varsity is by assignment only while JV is traditionally no-cut (numbers permitting). Both are coached by experienced, adult coaches.
As mentioned above, RHS also has co-ed (mixed) teams that play in the DiscNW Mixed League during the winter season. Mixed teams offer only half as many spots for each gender so many who play Varsity in Spring may be assigned JV in Winter. Tryouts and registration for the spring-season girls' teams are independent from mixed teams.
COACHING AND TEAM CAPTAINS
We're incredibly lucky to have access to high quality, professional Ultimate player/coaches in this area and our girls' teams have benefitted from excellent coaching by a consistent group of coaches for several years running including Charlie Eide (founding coach), Lexi Garrity, Khalif el-Salaam, Bonnie Ho, and Jason Laxague. Coaches for 2022 will be announced once the season is confirmed.
Captains are chosen by players and coaches based on experience, leadership, and spirit of the game. The 2021-22 Season Varsity Team captains are Seniors Ellie B., Keira L., Anna P. and Lucy T.

PRACTICES AND GAMES
Practices for Varsity and JV are usually 1-1/2 to 2 hours, in the after-school or early evening hours, 2-4 times per week. Practices are mostly at local sports fields in NE Seattle, not generally at RHS. Times and locations are only as consistent as Seattle Parks & Rec. field scheduling allows, but most fall in the 4-7p range except on early-release Wednesdays when they're mostly right after school. Be sure to double check the calendar here on the website to verify fields, dates, and times as they change week-to-week. The teams usually work out carpools with older players driving, but parent assistance is also welcome as transportation is not provided.
Games usually start in mid-March and take place after school during the week. Game days and locations vary, and may be at the home fields of opposing teams. Again, team carpools usually get players to games, but parent assistance is welcome.
REGISTRATION, WAIVERS, FEES, and SCHOLARSHIPS
After tryouts are completed and team assignments are announced, players will need to register with both DiscNW (www.discnw.org) and USA Ultimate (https://www.usaultimate.org/memberships/) and sign waivers. If you already have accounts, please just check that your information is up to date. No need to set up a new account. You will still need to sign online waivers.
Ultimate Frisbee does not require the same sports physical form signed by the player's doctor as required by SPS-sponsored sports. However, Ultimate is physically demanding and we strongly encourage every player to have an appropriate check-up by your doctor before trying out. Post tryouts, players will be asked to fill out an emergency contact form that coaches will keep on file for the season.
Players will be assessed a Participation Fee, which in 2020 would have been $350 for Varsity and $150 for Junior Varsity. Participation fees cover the DiscNW league fee, field rentals, equipment, coaches, and local tournament costs. Payments must be received within a week after team announcements for your student to participate. No fee will be due if your student is not placed on a team following tryouts. Players will also need to order and pay for a uniform at the start of the season.
Players are also responsible for paying for travel tournament expenses. In prior years, the team has sold coffee to raise money to defray the cost of the tournament fees, hotel, van rental, and food at the tournament. Families have paid separately for the airline tickets. We'll continue to organize team fundraising opportunities in order to keep away-tournaments affordable for all players.
Scholarships are available. Please contact email@example.com with questions about financial aid. All inquiries will be confidential. We don't want money standing in the way of a student playing Ultimate.
