RHS Girls Ultimate

This is the official website for the Roosevelt High School Girls Ultimate team in Seattle, Washington. The Girls Ultimate program at RHS is a strong, established club team that thrives thanks to our emphasis on highly skilled, team oriented, and competitive play in the spirit of the game. While the 2020 and 2021 seasons were cancelled, disrupted, and reconfigured for the pandemic, in 2019 the Varsity team won the quadruple crown of high school ultimate: the SPS league, the Seattle Invite, the Washington State Championship, and the High School National Invitational. Moving ahead, we hope to return the program to that same level of skill, sportsmanship, and fun. The team is run by parents and students who volunteer their time to help support the team.

We're grateful for sponsorship by local coffee company, Caffe Ladro, who has operated neighborhood cafes, bakeries, and roasteries in the Seattle area since 1994. Their cafe on the corner of Northeast 65th St. and Brooklyn Ave. NE, one block in front of RHS, is a welcoming place to take a break. Please help us thank them by supporting all of their locations!

SPRING 2022 - HS Girls Season

UPDATE 1/2/22: We hope and expect that the DNW HS Girls League will happen as planned starting in mid-March. PLEASE NOTE that DNW will be REQUIRING ALL PLAYERS AND COACHES TO SHOW PROOF OF COVID VACCINATION for the Spring Girls seaosn.

Prior to tryouts, players will need to complete a Google Docs registration form whose link will be posted here when the time comes. Once team placements are announced after tryouts, players have five days to make payment (see below), or other financial arrangements, to accept their spot on a team. Practices begin immediately following tryouts, with dates, times, and locations posted on the calendar. To get on our email list to receive email updates, please use this link--> https://RHSGirlsUltiRegForm and/or continue to check back here for updates.

For Girls' Spring season, tryouts will be held over two days during the week of 2/28 with assignments to Varsity and JV teams immediately following, followed by the start of the season. The future success of our program relies on a strong pipeline of players, so athletes of all ages and abilities are encouraged to try out as we offer both a Varsity team and a no-cut JV team (numbers permitting), both coached by experienced adult coaches. Tryouts for the Spring, 2022 season will be held the week of 2/28 with more details to follow soon. Please note that tryouts, team placement, and registration for the spring-season girls' teams are independent from the winter mixed teams.

TEAMS (Spring League)

We field a Varsity and a Junior Varsity team. Varsity is by assignment only while JV is traditionally no-cut (numbers permitting). Both are coached by experienced, adult coaches.

As mentioned above, RHS also has co-ed (mixed) teams that play in the DiscNW Mixed League during the winter season. Mixed teams offer only half as many spots for each gender so many who play Varsity on single-gender teams may be assigned to JV on a mixed team. Tryouts and registration for the spring-season girls' teams are independent from mixed teams.

We're incredibly lucky to have access to high quality, professional Ultimate player/coaches in this area and our girls' teams have benefitted from excellent coaching by a consistent group of coaches for several years running including Charlie Eide (founding coach), Lexi Garrity, Khalif el-Salaam, Bonnie Ho, and Jason Laxague. Returning for 2022 will be Coach Khalif for Varsity, Coach Bonnie for JV, and potentially a third coach, tbd.

Captains are chosen by players and coaches based on experience, leadership, and spirit of the game. The 2021-22 Season Varsity Team captains are Seniors Ellie B., Keira L., Anna P. and Lucy T.

EXAMPLE SEASON (Spring League)

December-January - February tryout dates announced. Players who intend to tryout should complete this Google Document form prior to tryouts: https://RHSGirlsUltiRegForm

mid-February- Tryout locations announced. Always check the calendar for up to date info. Team placements to varsity and jv happen immediately following tryouts.

Early March - Practices continue immediately following tryouts.

March - Game schedules announced; games usually began mid-March.

early / mid-April - Seattle Girls' HS Invite and JV Jamboree tournaments at the Skagit Playfields in Burlington, Washington (Varsity and JV).

Late May - SPS League Playoffs.

May or June - Travel Tournament for Varsity team; additional tournament for JV team.

Practices for Varsity and JV are usually 1-1/2 to 2 hours, in the after-school or early evening hours, 2-4 times per week. Practices are mostly at local sports fields in NE Seattle, not generally at RHS. Times and locations are only as consistent as Seattle Parks & Rec. field scheduling allows, but most fall in the 4-7p range except on early-release Wednesdays when they're mostly right after school. Be sure to double check the calendar here on the website to verify fields, dates, and times as they change week-to-week. The teams usually work out carpools with older players driving, but parent assistance is also welcome as transportation is not provided.

Games usually start in mid-March and take place after school during the week. Game days and locations vary, and may be at the home fields of opposing teams. Again, team carpools usually get players to games, but parent assistance is welcome.

DiscNW (www.discnw.org) has begun registering players individually and charging league fees on a sliding scale. Before tryouts, you will need to register your player with DNW, pay the league registration fee, and sign the waivers. If you do not have a DNW account you will need to create one, otherwise please use your existing DNW account.

In addition, players accepted on to teams will be assessed a Team Fee by RHS Ultimate which covers field rentals, coach stipends, and equipment. Team fees range from $200-350/player per season, depending on several factors. Payments must be received within five days after team announcements for your student to participate. No fee will be due if your student is not placed on a team following tryouts, or chooses not to play, and DNW will also refund your league fee. Players will also need to order and pay for a uniform at the start of the season. Scholarships are available! Please contact rhsgirlsultimate@gmail.com with questions about financial aid. All inquiries will be confidential. We don't want money standing in the way of a student playing Ultimate.

Ultimate Frisbee does not require the same sports physical form signed by the player's doctor as required by SPS-sponsored sports. However, Ultimate is physically demanding and we strongly encourage every player to have an appropriate check-up by your doctor before trying out. Post tryouts, players will be asked to fill out an emergency contact form that coaches will keep on file for the season.

Players are also responsible for paying for travel tournament expenses. In prior years, the team has sold coffee to raise money to defray the cost of the tournament fees, hotel, van rental, and food at the tournament. Families have paid separately for the airline tickets. We'll continue to organize team fundraising opportunities in order to keep away-tournaments affordable for all players.

Participation fees may be paid via PayPal at RHSgirlult@outlook.com. If you use PayPal, please pay to friends and family so the team isn't charged a fee. If you'd prefer to send a check, please email rhsgirlsultimate@gmail.com for instructions.
