RHS Girls Ultimate
WELCOME TO RHS GIRLS ULTIMATE
This is the official website for the Roosevelt High School Girls Ultimate team in Seattle, Washington. The Girls Ultimate program at RHS is a strong, established club team. In the 2019 season, the Varsity team won the quadruple crown of high school ultimate: the SPS league, the Seattle Invite, the Washington State Championship, and the High School National Invitational. The program thrives thanks to a carefully cultivated empahsis on highly skilled, team oriented, and competitive play in the spirit of the game.
We compete as a club sport in the DiscNW High School Girls' League during the spring season - roughly late February to early June - as well as two tournaments. The team is run by parents and students who volunteer their time to help support the team.
If you are looking for the RHS Boys Ultimate team, their site can be found here.
This year, we're grateful for sponsorship by local coffee company, Caffe Ladro, who has operated neighborhood cafes, bakeries, and roasteries in the Seattle area since 1994. Their newest cafe opened on the corner of Northeast 65th St. and Brooklyn Ave. NE, one block in front of RHS. Please help us thank them by supporting all of their locations!
TRYOUTS / FIRST PRACTICES
ALL players need to complete this Google Docs registration form: https://RHSGirlsUltiRegForm . Please note that tryouts and registration for the spring-season girls' teams are independent from the mixed teams. Even if you played mixed, or played on last year's girls' team, we still need a registration for you.
The team has both Varsity and JV teams and we expect to have space for roughly 20 players per team. Players will be offered a spot by the coaches based on experience, ability, enthusiasm, and spirit of the game. We encourage everyone who's interested to come out!
First Practices for all new and returning players will be:
- Monday, March 2, 4-6pm at Magnuson Park, grass field #3 (NW corner of sports meadow).
- Tuesday, March 3, 7-8:30pm under the lights at Lower Woodland 7 (corner of Green Lake Way N., and W. Green Lake Way N., across from the putting course)
- if necessary for space, cuts will be made Tuesday night then practices will continue:
- Wednesday, March 4, 2:45-4:45 at Magnuson #3 and
- Thursday, March 5, 4-6p at Magnuson turf #7 so coaches may continue to evaluate players for placement.
Accepted players will have a week to submit their paperwork and payment (see below), or make other financial arrangements. Practices continue the week of March 9 and beyond, see the calendar for dates, times, and locations.
We field a Varsity and a Junior Varsity team. In the 2019 Spring Season, there were 33 players on the combined teams. We expect to have space for roughly 20 players per team in 2020.
Note that Roosevelt High School also has a co-ed club team that plays in the DiscNW Mixed League during the winter season. Tryouts and registration for the spring-season girls' teams are independent from mixed teams.
COACHING AND TEAM CAPTAINS
We're incredibly lucky to have access to high quality, professional frisbee players in this area and our girls' teams have benefitted from excellent coaching. We are pleased to announce that for the 2020 Season the returning Junior Varsity coach will be Isaac Chamberlain and the returning Varsity coaches will be Charlie Eide and Lexi Garrity.
The 2020 Season Varsity Team captains are Seniors Aria, Sarah and Tori.

PRACTICES AND GAMES
Varsity practices are usually 1-1/2 to 2 hours, Mon, Wed., and Thurs., in the after-school or early evening hours, with an optional captains' practice once a week. JV practices will be 2-3 times per week. Practices are mostly at Magnuson Park fields with a few at Lower Woodland and some at the RHS turf field. Unfortunately due to field scheduling, our times are not consistent but most fall in the 4-7p range except on early-release Wednesdays when they're right after school. Be sure to double check the calendar here on the website to verify fields, dates, and times. The teams usually work out carpools with older players driving, but parent assistance is also welcome.
Games start in mid-March and will take place after school during the week. Game days and locations vary, and may be at the home fields of opposing teams. Again, team carpools usually get players to games, but parent assistance is welcome.
REGISTRATION, WAIVERS, FEES, and SCHOLARSHIPS
After tryouts are completed and team assignments are announced, players will need to register with both DiscNW (www.discnw.org) and USA Ultimate (https://www.usaultimate.org/memberships/) and sign waivers. If you already have accounts, please just check that your information is up to date. No need to set up a new account. You will still need to sign waivers.
Ultimate Frisbee does not require the same sports physical form signed by the player's doctor as required by SPS-sponsored sports. However, Ultimate is physically demanding and we strongly encourage every player to have an appropriate check-up by your doctor before trying out. Post tryouts, players will be asked to fill out an emergency contact form that coaches will keep on file for the season.
Players will be assessed a Participation Fee, which for 2020 will be $350 for Varsity and $150 for Junior Varsity. Participation fees cover the DiscNW league fee, field rentals, equipment, and coaching stipends, as well as local tournament costs. Payments must be received within a week after team announcements for your student to participate. No fee will be due if your student is not placed on a team following tryouts. Players will also need to order and pay for a uniform at the start of the season.
Players are also responsible for paying for travel tournament expenses. In prior years, the team has sold coffee to raise money to defray the cost of the tournament fees, hotel and van rental costs, and food at the tournament. Families have paid separately for the airline tickets. We're working on fundraising opportunities to help continue to keep away tournaments affordable for all players.
Scholarships are available. Please contact email@example.com with questions about financial aid. All inquiries will be confidential. We don't want money standing in the way of a student playing Ultimate.
