RHS Girls Ultimate

This is the official website for the Roosevelt High School Girls Ultimate team in Seattle, Washington. The Girls Ultimate program at RHS is a strong, established club team that thrives thanks to our emphasis on highly skilled, team oriented, and competitive play in the spirit of the game. While the 2020 and 2021 seasons were cancelled, disrupted, and reconfigured for the pandemic, 2022 saw a return to almost-normalcy with both SPS league play and outside tournaments resuming.

Moving ahead, we aim to return the program to the same level of skill, sportsmanship, and fun that's brought us SPS league titles, Seattle Invite titles, WA State Championships, and even the High School National Invitational championship in 2019 as the best HS Girls' team in the country, followed by a 3rd place finish in 2022. The team is run by parents and students who volunteer their time to help support the team. Please be in touch if you can help out! Finally, if you are looking for the RHS Boys Ultimate team, their site can be found here.

DiscNW (www.discnw.org) has begun registering players individually and charging league fees on a sliding scale. Before tryouts, you will need to fill out our Google Docs form (2022 Fall Registration), register your player with DNW, pay the league registration fee, sign the waivers, and provide proof of COVID vaccination. If you do not have a DNW account you will need to create one, otherwise please use your existing DNW account.

SPRING 2022 - HS Girls Season Re-cap

Please note that DNW required all players, coaches, and admins to show PROOF OF COVID VACCINATION at registration in Spring, '22, and that is likely to continue in 2022-23. More info is on their website here. Since vaccination was required, masks no longer were. Please continue to practice the common sense measures we're all accustomed to so that all our players can continue to practice and play.

UPDATE 5/22/22: SPS League and STATE CHAMPIONS!! Congrats on overcoming some amazing competition in the first spring girls' season since 2019. Thank you coaches, way to go players, and congrats to our Seniors! Roosevelt Girls Ulti is the 2022 WA State Champion after an epic, 110+ minute win.

The future success of our program relies on a strong pipeline of players, so we welcome athletes of all ages and abilities. We offer both a Varsity team and a JV team, both coached by experienced adult coaches. Please note that tryouts, team placement, and registration for the spring-season girls' teams are independent from the winter mixed teams and the fall club league.

Please check the calendar frequently for dates, times, and locations of practices and games, as schedules are subject to change, sometimes last minute.

6/13/22: We were incredibly honored to receive a return bid to the 2022 High School National Invite Tournament, hosted by Ultiworld and CUT, held in Richmond, VA. Returning as the #2 ranked team in the country to defend our 2019 Championship, RHS Girls rolled through the group play and early playoffs, only losing in an incredibly tight, and weather-delayed, semifinal game. Special thanks to all our parents and volunteers who made the trip happen, our generous donors who kept the trip affordable for all our players, and our hosts for organizing. Special congrats to eventual champions, South Eugene for their dominant play. We can't wait to see you all at HSNI in 2023!

Thank you!

WINTER 2022 Mixed (Co-ed) Season Re-cap

Thanks for a great mixed season and Spring Reign tournament!

The 2-day Spring Reign mixed tournament, historically the largest youth Mixed Ultimate tourney in the country, returned to Burlington in late April and congrats to the RHS Varsity Mixed team on finishing third! Unfortunately, the simultaneous JV Jamboree tourney was a victim of covid as most teams had to drop out last minute, but we're counting on a return in 2023.

TEAMS (Spring & Fall Leagues)

We field a Varsity and a Junior Varsity team in the competitive spring season. Varsity is by assignment only while JV is traditionally no-cut (numbers permitting). Both are coached by experienced, adult coaches. In the Fall, DiscNW also hosts a casual off-season league for girls' teams. RHS participated in this casual Fall league for the first time in 2021 and fielded a single team, as many players had conflicts with other sports.

RHS also has Varsity & JV Mixed (co-ed) teams that play in the DiscNW Mixed League during the winter season, with tryouts typically happening in mid-November and games running Dec. thru Feb. Mixed teams offer only half as many spots for each gender so many who play Varsity on single-gender teams may be assigned to JV on a mixed team. Tryouts and registration for the fall and spring-season girls' teams are independent from mixed teams, and from each other.

RHS Girls Varsity at Seattle Invite - May, '22

We're incredibly lucky to have access to high quality, professional Ultimate player/coaches in this area and our girls' teams have benefitted from excellent coaching by a consistent group of coaches for several years running including Charlie Eide (founding coach), Lexi Garrity, Khalif el-Salaam, Bonnie Ho, Kelly Johnson, and Jason Laxague. In Spring 2022, returning coaches were Coach Khalif for Varsity and Coach Bonnie for JV, being joined this season by Coach Kelly, also for the Varsity team.

Captains are chosen by players and coaches based on experience, leadership, and spirit of the game. The 2021-22 Season Varsity Team captains were Seniors Ellie B., Keira L., Anna P. and Lucy T.

EXAMPLE SEASON (Spring League)

  • December-January - February tryout dates announced.

  • mid-February- Tryout locations announced. Always check the calendar for up to date info. Team placements to varsity and jv happen immediately following tryouts.

  • Early March - Practices continue immediately following tryouts.

  • March - Game schedules announced; games usually began mid-March.

  • late April - Seattle Girls' HS Invite and JV Jamboree tournaments at the Skagit Playfields in Burlington, Washington (Varsity and JV). The 2022 dates were April 30 and May 1.

  • Late May - SPS League Playoffs.

  • May or June - possible travel tournament for Varsity team; possible additional tournament for JV team.

Practices for Varsity and JV are usually 1-1/2 to 2 hours, in the after-school or early evening hours, 2-4 times per week. Practices are mostly at local sports fields in NE Seattle, not generally at RHS. Times and locations are only as consistent as Seattle Parks & Rec. field scheduling allows, but most fall in the 4-7p range except on early-release Wednesdays when we try for right after school. Be sure to double check the calendar here on the website to verify fields, dates, and times as they change week-to-week. The teams usually work out carpools with older players driving, but parent assistance is also welcome as transportation is not provided.

Games usually start in mid-March and take place after school during the week. Game days and locations vary, and may be at the home fields of opposing teams. Again, team carpools usually get players to games, but parent assistance is welcome.

In addition to the registration fee paid directly to DiscNW, RHS Ultimate charges Team Fees to cover coaches, fields, and equipment costs that generally range from $200-350/player/season and confidential financial aid is always available. These fees, or other financial arrangements, are due within five days after team placement announcements following tryouts in order to accept your player's spot. No fee will be due if your student is not placed on a team following tryouts, or chooses not to play, and DNW will also refund your league fee. Players will also need to order and pay for a uniform at the start of the season. Scholarships are available! Please contact rhsgirlsultimate@gmail.com with questions about financial aid. All inquiries will be confidential. We don't want money standing in the way of a student playing Ultimate.

Team fees may be paid directly to RHS Girls Ultimate via PayPal at RHSgirlult@outlook.com. When using PayPal, please pay to friends and family so the team isn't charged a fee. If you'd prefer to send a check, or to inquire confidentially about financial aid, please email rhsgirlsultimate@gmail.com .

Ultimate Frisbee does not require the same sports physical form signed by the player's doctor as required by SPS-sponsored sports. However, Ultimate is physically demanding and we strongly encourage every player to have an appropriate check-up by your doctor before trying out.

Players are also responsible for paying for any travel tournament expenses. In prior years, the team has sold coffee, held bake sales, and organized fundraisers at local restaurants to raise money to defray the cost of the tournament fees, hotel, van rental, and food at the tournament. Families have paid separately for the airline tickets. We'll continue to organize team fundraising opportunities in order to keep away-tournaments affordable for all players.
